Adansonia is a genus of eight species of large trees and is the only genus in the family, Bombacaceae. The species are native to very dry areas of Africa, Madagascar, and Australia. They are also known as baobabs. These species have thick, woody trunks and branches that help them to survive in extremely arid climates. The trunks are typically swollen and buttress-like, forming a distinctive silhouette. The trees are deciduous in the dry season

The leaves of the baobab are alternate, simple, and deeply veined. They are usually dark green in color and can reach up to 40 centimeters in length. The flowers are bell-shaped and have a sweet, fruity scent. They are pollinated by bats, moths, and beetles. The fruits of Adansonia are round or oval and are covered with a thick, leathery rind. They are filled with a white, spongy, powdery pulp that contains numerous hard, dark seeds. The pulp is

Adansonia digitata, otherwise known as the African Baobab, is the most widespread species of Baobab. This species is found in savannas and open woodlands throughout Africa and is the national tree of Tanzania. The tree is valued for its medicinal properties, as well as for its edible fruits. The seeds of the African Baobab are also edible and are used to make a nutritious flour.

The species Adansonia grandidieri, or the Grandidier's Baobab, is endemic to Madagascar and is the most famous and widely recognized of the baobab species. This species is listed as endangered due to the destruction of its habitat. The Grandidier's Baobab is also known for its large, round fruits which are covered in a thick, leathery rind. The pulp of the fruit is edible and is often used to make refreshing drinks.

Adansonia digitata and Adansonia grandidieri are just two of the eight species of baobab trees. All of these species are important to their local habitats as they provide food and shelter to many animals, while also providing humans with a number of medicinal and nutritional benefits. The baobab tree is a symbol of resilience and strength, and its unique silhouette is an iconic part of the African landscape.
