Ilex vomitoria, commonly known as Yaupon Holly, is a species of flowering plant native to the southeastern United States. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree growing to a height of 15–20 feet and has a spread of 10–15 feet. The bark is grayish-brown and the leaves are dark green and glossy, with spines along the margins. The small white flowers have four petals, and are followed by red berries, which are edible and can be used to make a tea.

The Ilex vomitoria is a hardy plant and is drought tolerant, making it an ideal choice for gardens in dry climates. It can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and can even thrive in full sun or partial shade. It is also resistant to many pests and diseases, making it a great choice for an ornamental landscape.

The Yaupon Holly berries are highly prized by wildlife, especially birds, and are a great source of food during the winter months. They are also used to make a medicinal tea with a stimulating effect. This tea is said to have many health benefits, such as aiding digestion, relieving headaches, and helping with weight loss.

The berries and leaves of Ilex vomitoria are used to make a traditional Native American ceremonial drink called “black drink.” This is a ritualistic tea made from the dried leaves and berries of the plant, which is thought to have purifying and cleansing properties.

Ilex vomitoria is a popular choice for landscaping due to its hardiness and beauty. It is a versatile plant that can be used in a variety of ways, from hedges and screens to specimen plants in containers. The glossy foliage and red berries make it an attractive addition to any garden.
